FHS Annual General Meeting and Works in Progress Talks
The Annual General Meeting for the year ending 30 June 2022 will be held at the East India Club. The AGM will start at 11.00am (coffee from 10.30am)
Talks will follow the business of the day.
Hugo Burge a Director of Marchmont who will talk about how it has become a home to makers and creators, celebrating creativity across the arts, crafts, business and social enterprise.
Jessica Eddie, Curator Gilbert Collection, V&A on The Roman Tabernacle; the Gilbert Collection. Jessica will take a deeper look into what has long been thought of as an early 18th century hardstone tabernacle. A sacred place where the host would be kept as part of a larger alter, this fascinating object has been analysed and taken apart to reveal some of its hidden secrets.
Matthew Hirst, Curator at Woburn Abbey and Gardens. Woburn Abbey closed to visitors in the autumn of 2019 ahead of a major refurbishment project. This generational investment will see a reordering of the visitor route, much interior restoration and a complete representation of the collection, In addition, the unique and important Grotto Apartment built for the 4th Earl of Bedford in c.1630 has been fully reinstated following an exhaustive research project. This has enabled the Mortlake Acts of the Apostles tapestries to be returned to the room for which they were purchased for the first time in over 200 years. Matthew Hirst will give an update on works in progress and highlight some of the conservation projects that have been undertaken.
Norman Hudson, Chairman of the Historic Houses Foundation, will describe the work of this charitable grant-giving body and how it helps fill an important funding gap in the restoration of country houses, their associated buildings and which might include integral furnishings and historically associated paintings.
