MembershipStudy Trips and Individual Research Grants Funded primarily by the Tom Ingram Memorial Fund and the Oliver Ford Trust, applications for assistance in funding expenses for individual research or travel on FHS study trips. See the conditions below regarding our remits.
The Tom Ingram Memorial Fund
Established in memory of Tom Ingram, the distinguished archivist and President of the Society from 1979 until his death in 1990, this FHS fund awards grants to cover travel and other incidental expenses for the purpose of study or research into the history of furniture - whether or not the applicant is a member of the Society - only when the study or research is likely to be of importance in furthering the objectives of the Society, and only when travel could not be undertaken without a grant from the Society. The Fund assists scholars and students of all ages and from all countries conducting independent research or participating in Society events and thus furthering their knowledge in the field of furniture and the decorative arts. In either case applications are encouraged that will lead to publication or show clear professional benefit. In the past, many scholars who have received grants have had their research published in the annual FHS Journal, Furniture History, or in the FHS Newsletter.
The Oliver Ford Trust
The Oliver Ford Trust, endowed under the will of Oliver Ford, an internationally celebrated interior decorator, generously supports the aims of the Tom Ingram Memorial Fund through grants specifically to younger scholars and junior curators/conservators/professionals at an early stage of career development. These grants are used for Junior Curators to travel to TEFAF in Maastricht to study furniture collections and to learn about works of art in the company of experts and dealers. Secondly, the Oliver Ford Trust supports the costs of highly successful research symposia, held every eighteen months, which allow emerging scholars to present their research in furniture studies of a broad public. .
