The East Wing of Buckingham Palace which includes the iconic front façade and features the famous central balcony where the Monarch and Members of the Royal Family make appearances, was built between 1847 and 1849, extending the footprint of the Palace to increase accommodation for Queen Victoria’s growing family.
The building of the East Wing was financed through the sale of George IV’s seaside retreat in Brighton, the Royal Pavilion, in 1850. The style of the architecture and interiors of the Pavilion reflected the King’s love of the chinoiserie style, and upon the sale of the building, its contents were transferred to the East Wing at Buckingham Palace, inspiring the décor of its principal rooms, and featuring some of the finest furniture in the Royal Collection.
Starting in 2017, the Reservicing of Buckingham Palace is a ten-year programme of works to update the essential services to one of the UK's most iconic buildings and has provided the opportunity for the conservation of many of the works of art in the Royal Collection.
The newly renovated East Wing was completed in Spring 2024 and opened to the public for a limited number of tours for the first time, later that year.
Our exclusive private tour led by Caroline de Guitaut, Surveyor of The King's Works of Art, will focus on the furniture and decorative art in the principal rooms of the East Wing, including the Yellow Drawing Room, Principal Corridor and the Centre Room.
